What is the role of digital technologies for venturing in the face of uncertainty? Vassilakopoulou, P., & Grisot, M. (2020). Effectual tactics in digital intrapreneurship: A process model. The Journal of Strategic Information Systems, 29(3), 101617.
Digital technologies open up new ways for uncertainty handling in the pursuit of organizational novelty. Evocative digital technologies make it possible to mock up and envision future services enrolling supporters early in the process. Tailorable web-based applications that can be quickly deployed facilitate probing and experimentation. Architectural choices that minimize dependencies provide the freedom to exploit contingencies.
In this paper, we explored the tactics employed for the introduction of novel digital services in a major hospital in Norway. Drawing on the empirical findings, we generated a process model of tactics for uncertainty handling. The tactics identified address uncertainty by continuous re-evaluation and dynamic control of environment changes and response options. The model foregrounds the role of digital technologies and provides a basis for further theorizing the role of the “digital” in intrapreneurial action-taking.
Intrapreneurial action-taking and practice-driven innovations are important for complex organizations. Our research shows how digital technologies facilitate grassroots venturing.
